Jump Up the Sun!

Come Celebrate May Day 2019 with the Seabright Morris Dancers

May is probably the sexiest month of the year. It is a time for singing the praises of ancient pagan festivals and traditions, celebrating the mating game – a tradition that continues to this day of reveling in all things fertile, green, and juicy. The May Day ritual is a time for letting one’s hair down and celebrating the most primal forces of life. Morris Dancers “dance in” May Day at predawn, with sticks, ribbons, bells, hankies, and baldrics flying and all to live folk music to wake the Sun and bring it back for a whole year! Besides being a great deal of fun, you’ll notice it works, too! Be part of it. Show up while it’s dark and watch the Sun make its grand entrance. See the spectacle! Watch the magic! Cheer the dancers! Join in the celebration! May Day traditions are built around maypole dances, Morris men, the crowning of a Queen of the May and the revels of the Green Man or Jack-in-the-Green, an ancient woodland spirit. Morris dancing is a joyful and physically powerful spectacle to behold and has been danced for hundreds of years, passed down through the generations in the villages of rural England and to all countries that were colonized by the Brits. As the Sun chases away the darkness on the morning of May 1st, Santa Cruz is one of the final spots in the world to witness the spiritually captivating ritual of dancing the Sun up. Seabright Morris has been dancing the Sun up at the Santa Cruz Lighthouse for 28 years. We invite you to meet at the Santa Cruz Lighthouse at 6:00 am on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 to welcome the Sun! 701 West Cliff Drive. seabrightmorris.org
