The Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on August 10, 2021 to review proposed changes to the County’s ADU regulations. The Board was largely supportive of the ordinance as recommended by the Planning Commission but asked staff to make several changes to the ordinance before returning to the Board. These changes included:

(1) Maintain the County’s existing requirements regarding ADU owner occupancy (rather than removing these requirements)

(2) Add objective design standards for ADUs to address neighborhood compatibility

(3) Clarify that “Conversion ADUs” can include demolition of an existing building and rebuilding within the same building envelope area.

The Board is scheduled to consider the ordinance with these revisions, as well as several additional changes regarding compliance with the California Coastal Act, on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, at the meeting starting at 9:00 AM.

This will be a hybrid meeting held in person at 701 Ocean Street, 5th Floor Board Chambers, and online on the Zoom platform. Instructions for participation will be provided here: https://santacruzcountyca.iqm2.com/Citizens/Detail_Meeting.aspx?ID=1882

Members of the public may also submit written comments directly to me, and those comments will be added to the public record and reviewed by decision makers.

Visit the County’s ADU website to learn more and review materials from meetings held so far regarding the proposed changes to ADU regulations.
