Lung Support

by Marcey Klein BS, CNC

In light of the recent fires and the covid, it is very important to bolster the health of our lungs. We are using more of our own antioxidants to detox the impurities in the air, potentially leaving our immune systems with lower resources to combat pathogens.

Vitamins A, C, and E are especially important antioxidants for the lungs. Vitamin A is good for the mucus membranes, wound healing, and is antiviral. Vitamin C helps with collagen formation, cancer prevention, and immune system health. And vitamin E is an excellent fat soluble antioxidant.  Zinc is also important because it helps the body detox environmental pollutants and it is also antiviral.

Herbs can be a wonderful tool as well to support our lungs. The first and for most lung supporting herb would be Mullein. This plant even reminds you of lungs in that it’s light, fluffy, and has little soft hairs similar to cilia in lung tissue. It has been known to help clear phlegm, bring down inflammation in the lungs, and is antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal. A tea is a popular way to ingest this herb, or you can buy a tincture of it and put it in water.  Osha root is also wonderful, as is Lobelia, Lomatium, Herba Santa, and licorice. All of these herbs have been used traditionally to support the lungs and immune system, and you can buy them already in lung formulas at my store.

Mushrooms have a tremendous capacity for healing, and the super star for the lungs is cordyceps. This mushroom has been shown in studies to enhance oxygen capacity, improve lung function, and support the immune system. Other supportive mushrooms are reishi, turkey tail, and shitake (which taste delicious by the way). The best way to take them is in a formula, or just straight cordyceps if your lungs need that added support.

Please stop by the Wild Roots store in Boulder Creek if you have any questions or if you’re ready to invest in your health.  In the meantime, take care of yourselves and be well!
