Winter Well Being

Before I get into my article, I wanted to thank the customer who took the time to give me feedback on the information I had on eggs. In last month’s article I cited studies that showed the benefits of eggs, but this customer cited studies that showed the exact opposite, the studies cited the detriment of eggs to the body. This is a perfect example of what we have done to our food supply. We take a perfectly good wholesome food, and we manipulate it to produce more, we spray, we tinker, we harm, and we expect to get good nutrition and health from a damaged, depleted product. If we ate the way we were intended to, diversified plants grown in nutrient rich soil, animals living healthy lives outdoors, and eggs from healthy chickens, then our bodies can recognize and incorporate this nutrition into making better and healthier bodies. And there is such a difference when I eat eggs from heirloom chickens, or eggs from friends that raise chickens, the yolks are a bright orange, and the taste is incredible.  So the lesson to take home is to eat the best quality eggs you can get, be moderate, and even branch out to try duck eggs, as ducks have not been manipulated and hybridized like our poor chickens. And listen to your body, some people are sensitive to eggs and cannot digest them well. A good substitute for eggs are beans, the fiber and protein will fill you up, and since your digestive system is at its peak in the morning, that is a good time to have them.

Now let’s talk about what we can do to strengthen our immune systems to protect ourselves from the flu. Elderberry syrup is a fantastic product. It’s naturally antiviral, the sugars in it give our cells a protective coating that prevents the virus from landing on cells and replicating.  It is also good for helping resolve the mucus production that can happen in the back of our throats.

Vitamin C is an absolute must. I take vitamin C year round, it’s good for your arteries, for your connective tissue, it’s a fabulous antioxidant, a great cancer preventative, and good for your eyes. It’s best to take with bioflavonoids as that helps the absorption. It’s also antiviral and anti-inflammatory so great for fighting the flu. When you are fighting something off, you can take a lot more, up to 8 grams!

There is a homeopathic product you can take at the first sign of the flu, and that’s Oscillococcinum. These little pellets are extremely effective, they say over 96% effective if taken at the first sign of symptoms, so it’s best to have them on hand in case you feel something at night, and we actually have them on sale right now at Wild Roots Market by the way.

I, of course recommend zinc which is antiviral, and there is a new product that combines zinc and epi core, which is fermented nutritional yeast, found to be fantastic for immune cell communication. These delicious chewable wafers are extremely effective.

Certain mushrooms help stimulate our T cells. We have fantastic products that combine certain medicinal mushrooms specific for the immune system, and I have found them to be extremely effective, so effective that I started taking them from the feedback customers were giving me. And I have found the Wild Roots Mushroom Immune formula to be the strongest and most affordable product we have.

Hydration and maintaining an alkaline state in the body gives our cells the best chance to be healthy. Apple cider vinegar, lemon, and anything green or high in minerals helps us to stay alkaline. Viruses, bacteria, and cancer love an acid state in our body, since there is lack of oxygen. Sugar, stress, overconsumption of alcohol, highly processed foods, and smoking are the biggest contributors to an acid state.

There are a lot of other things that support the body I am just going to throw out here, and if you have any questions, please stop by Wild Roots, or the new apothecary store in town to ask. The other things that are very effective are andrographis, astragalus, garlic, cayenne pepper, vitamin A, vitamin D, selenium, oregano oil, olive leaf, pau d arco, and goldenseal.

Until next time, stay well, work with your body and keep your life in balance!
