Camp Harmon’s Annual Christmas Tree Burning

Another year, another holiday season behind us, Camp Harmon hosted Kevin Foster’s annual Christmas tree burning.  Community gathered, hauling in their saved, dry and naked Christmas trees to throw on the pyre.  Certified in Fire Safety and Pyrotechnics, Foster had the burn permit in place and Sheriffs standing by, as he lit the pile ablaze.  Always “by the book” with regard to certified fire regulations and water hose at the ready, it was an impressive event.  One attendee felt that we clearly needed more trees while videos provided a slow-motion view of the snap-crackle dance of the beauty of the fire spirit.

Yummy homemade chilis with cornbread and all the fixings, salads and sweets awaited off to the side for the conclusion of the enormous bonfire; all trees consumed, then so was the food.  Many thanks to those who cooked deliciousness to nourish the crowd on this cool winter day.

Foster introduced Camp Harmon’s new Camp Director Anna Chambers to the community, and she made a brief welcoming talk to those who were there.  Recently from Colorado with six years of experience working with Camps and the Disabled, Anna is grateful to have come to live in such a warm and welcoming community.  She looks forward to another exciting summer of camp sessions for Special Needs kids and adults….  some who have come to Harmon for 20-30 years.  It must be the thrill of the giant swing that launches them in their wheelchairs 50 feet out over the river amongst all the other fun and exciting activities that keeps them coming back year after year!

Quite the event, the annual tree burning is a “not to be missed” for next year’s calendar as any and all from the community are always welcome.  Be sure to stay tuned into events at Camp Harmon, as Anna begins to implement new and exciting changes.  Truly a magical place, Harmon’s facilities are available for rentals, weddings and all types of gatherings.
