Mountain Roads Makeover

Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission Phase 2

The RTC will be holding focus groups to get public input on the Phase 2 Draft Report of the Highway 9-San Lorenzo Valley Corridor Transportation Plan. San Lorenzo Valley organizations and active community members are invited to participate.

RTC is working with the community to prepare a complete streets plan for Highway 9 and connecting county roads through San Lorenzo Valley (SLV). The plan will identify, prioritize, and enable implementation of the most critical and cost-effective transportation projects. This mountainous roadway serves as the “Main Street” and economic center for the towns of Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, and Boulder Creek and as an interregional arterial connecting Silicon Valley and Santa Cruz. The plan will focus on safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists; access to schools, businesses, and bus stops; traffic operations, pavement conditions, drainage and other needs in this important travel corridor.

This corridor-specific plan will be a stepping stone to securing funding for priority investments and provide a framework for partnering with Caltrans to implement investments that promote complete streets, implement sustainable communities strategies, and improve multi-modal access, connectivity, safety, security, system preservation, economic vitality and environmental quality. The completed plan will include conceptual complete street designs and be used to facilitate subsequent design, environmental review and construction of improvements.

The second phase of the draft report plan is nearing completion, but before the report is published for comment by the general public, RTC is inviting smaller focus groups of people who drive, ride the bus, ride a bike, or walk the corridor to vet the report and provide feedback on the projects we are considering. The focus groups will occur in the next month or two and they will be approximately two hours long on a weekday evening. If you or someone else from your organization is interested in participating, let the RTC know: https://sccrtc.org/projects/streets-highways/hwy-9-plan
