These little candy canes have been in my family for over 40 years. This is a task I would do with my daughters allowing me to spend time in their company. Making each cane is a fun activity for small hands. This recipe makes about 4 dozen so relax and enjoy the process. If you are wondering why I use powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar that’s because powdered sugar helps the cookie hold its shape and not flatten it also keeps the cookie soft. Powdered sugar contains cornstarch usually 3 to 5 %.  Substituting granulated sugar for powdered sugar would produce a grainy texture to your cookies and a flat shaped cane. If you are a fan of peppermint try substituting peppermint extract for almond. We hope you have fun experimenting a little this holiday season with new recipes and ingredients. You may just create a new family favorite. Wishing you peace and joy this Holiday Season.

Candy Cane Cookies

1 cup powdered sugar

½ cup butter or margarine

½ cup shortening

1 egg

1 ½ teaspoons almond extract

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

Red food color

½ cup peppermint candy

½ cup sugar

Heat oven to 375. Cream butter, shortening and powdered sugar. Add egg, almond extract and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Divide dough into halves. Tint 1 half with food color. For each candy cane, shape 1 teaspoon dough from each part into 4-inch rope. For smooth, even strips, roll back and forth on a lightly floured board. Place one white and one red strip side by side; press together lightly and twist. Complete cookies one at a time. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Curve the top down to form handle of cane. Bake until set but not brown about 9 minutes.

Mix candies and sugar; immediately sprinkle over cookies and remove from sheet.
